Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long is the initial assessment, do I need a referral and how do I book?
The initial assessment is usually an hour but it is safer to allow up to an hour and a half. A referral is not required and you can contact your closest Centre to make a booking.
What do I bring to the assessment?
After booking your initial appointment, you will receive a confirmation and a questionnaire to complete. Ideally, you should have had your eyes tested by an Optometrist within the last 2 years. Bring glasses if worn and the prescription if known. It would be helpful to bring a copy of any relevant medical or academic reports that you would like to discuss
How long is the treatment?
Treatment is 10 sessions in total. Each session goes for approximately 1 hour.
Do I need to complete all 10 sessions?
Yes. In order to progress through the 7 layers of the visual cortex and make the treatment effective and permanent all 10 sessions should be completed.
What is the shortest time I can do the treatment?
The shortest amount of time is one treatment per day, if required. Usually the intensive program is done in 2 weeks with a break over the weekend. You need time to complete the homework exercises between treatments. The ideal time to do this is during a school holiday break or when commitments are kept to a minimum so you can make the treatment a priority and achieve the best results.
Is the treatment expensive?
The treatment is affordable and an important investment particularly when it can change lives.
Please contact the Centre closest to you and we are happy to give you pricing information.
Do I have to pay upfront?
No. Payment can be made at each session or in advance. Whatever is easier for you.
Can I claim the cost of the treatment under Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
This treatment is unique so it is not generally covered, however all Private Health Care and individual cover is different so please check with your provider.
What age is too young/old to do the treatment?
The treatment works for clients as young as 6 and over 60 years of age. If you have a child under 6, we can still do an assessment and will advise you if they are ready to do the treatment or wait until they are older.
My son only shows a couple of symptoms, is it still worth having an assessment?
Definitely.
After the assessment we will tell you whether they are suitable for the treatment.
My daughter is in yr 1 and reads very well. She is in the top reading group. Could she still need and benefit from the treatment?
Often Kindergarten to Yr 1 work can be very easy for clever children and they rely on memory. It is not until they need to read longer texts and be able to comprehend that problems may arise. Poor comprehension is a key sign, as school work gets harder.
My high school child is intelligent and reads very well, but I think they could perform better. Could they benefit from the treatment?
Yes. This has nothing to do with intelligence and often these people are skilled in other areas, such as art, sport, drama and working with their hands. They just think and process information differently.
I know I am dyslexic, but have been told that nothing can be done. Will your treatment benefit me?
Yes! But an assessment is required to see how the eyes and brain are working together.
I have been to an OPTOMETRIST and they said my eyes don’t have any issues and I have 20/20 vision. Is there a chance I may still need treatment?
Yes.
There are many other vision problems that are not picked up in routine eye tests. We look at eye focusing, eye coordination, eye movement, binocular vision (eye teaming), visual perception skills and check the fixation point in both eyes.
Will I need to wear glasses?
Specialised glasses are worn during the treatment to assist in strengthening the eyes. If you wear glasses normally for short or long sightedness, you may wish to have your eyes tested again after completing treatment. If your prescription was a mild one, you may not need them any more as the treatment may have improved your eyesight.
At the assessment we will discuss if/why you wear glasses and your prescription.
Does the treatment or assessment hurt?
No. There is nothing to be afraid or worried about. No drugs or big scary machines. Most children find the assessment and treatment quite fun!
How soon can I expect to see improvements?
Everyone is different and presents with a different cluster of symptoms. If we recommend treatment we know we can be helpful but we can’t guarantee the timing. We monitor the progress of clients to determine the changes they are experiencing throughout the program. Improvements are often noticed by clients within the first half of the treatment. However, it can take some time for the learning to consolidate so it could take 3, 6 or 12 months.
After completing all 10 sessions will any extra work be required?
Once the treatment has been completed, there are generally no more eye exercises or homework to be done. There will however be gaps in the client’s knowledge from the years of their life spent with visual dyslexia. It is important to catch up on these gaps, so we will provide written recommendations at the final assessment of what can be followed on with.
Do you only treat dyslexia?
Although this is a vision training program, because it is multi-sensory it can help other conditions. Dyslexia can vary greatly in its symptoms and can overlap with quite a few other conditions. It has been known to help auditory processing, ADHD, dyspraxia and dyscalculia.
